On one hand, it’s good for the U.S. to get tough with China, Fengsou Zhou, president of Humanitarian China, told me this month when he spoke at the Overseas Press Club’s #Tiananmen30 seminar.  But sadly, human rights in China are taking a back seat to Trump’s counterproductive tariff war. One of the worst things that could come out of this: China gets verifiable evidence that democratic elections only lead to rule by incompetent populism. Humanitarian China keeps the battle for rule-of-law and human rights going, though.
